Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate, through the use of an interdisciplinary approach within the fi elds of engineering and conservation, the possibility of using a geopolymeric binder to create a cement-free mortar for use in the restoration of concrete structures, conforming to the standard EN 1504-3 while also respecting the aesthetic aspects (texture and color) of the original material. The creation of a binder of this type allows for a restoration with a minimal environmental impact. Through a reduction of CO2 emissions, a recycling of industrial by-products and a reduction in the use of environmental resources. The rheological and physical properties of different mortars based on metakaolin, blast-furnace slag, and mixtures of the two, activated with sodium silicate, potassium silicate, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide were investigated in terms of mechanical properties (compressive strength, fl exural strength, and adhesion), and physical tests (water absorption and hydraulic shrinkage). In addition, the presence of salt effl orescence was also evaluated . The research has brought to light the limitations of the mixture containing only metakaolin and has confi rmed the optimal rheological properties and wide applicability of the binder composed of blast-furnace slag, highlighting however, that the mixture of the two creates the most ideal mortars.
