Abstract

This paper discusses the development of the Planar Abrasion Metre (PAM), a tool that allows the laboratory assessment of a consolidation treatment by measuring the resistance to abrasion in function of depth. To assess the potentiality and limits of the instrument, testing has been conducted on non-treated and consolidated specimens, prepared from two stone types, white Carrara marble and “gentle” Lecce Stone. White Carrara marble specimens were thermally aged before consolidation. The results demonstrate a very similar behavior for all the consolidated specimens, and therefore confirm abrasion resistance measurement as a potentially viable method for assessing stone consolidation.
