Abstract

-- Since the appearance of coronavirus at the end of 2019 there have been more than 600 million infections and more than 6 million deaths globally (https://covid19.who.int, 31 agosto 2022). One of the first European countries to be affected was Italy, which currently has more than 175’000 deaths. Given these numbers, news and information began to spread rapidly and widely. These increase in activity was also seen in online social media. The consequence has been an increase in disinformation and harmful activities aimed at influencing public opinion on these communication platforms. The main objective of this project is to be able to characterise the users in a dataset collected by Twitter (VaccinItaly, Francesco Pierri et. Al.). This dataset contains tweets related to the discussion on vaccines and covid19 in Italy, for the period from January 2020 to May 2021. Other secondary objectives, set to achieve the main one, include the textual analysis of tweets to understand the emotions, feelings, toxicity and category to which a post belongs. For users, on the other hand, we wanted to see if a classification was possible through tools such as Botometer and Trollmeter. Classification of users was possible and allowed the other metrics to be exploited for a direct comparison of behaviour. The class that differs the most from the others, in terms of types of tweets used and emotions, are the bots. The other two classes, namely trolls and normal users, are more similar in terms of behaviour. When analysing toxicity, the class that stands out is the one of normal users, which has higher values than the other two.
