Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the phenomenon of the digitalization in the tourism sector. The growing essence of technology, namely the Fourth Industrial Revolution, leads to a rapid growth of digitalization (Technology Innovation Management Review, 2017). The tourism industry has also been revolutionized, in fact as of 2020, 65% of revenue in the global travel and tourism market came from online sales channels (Statista, 2021). Consistently concerning what has just been mentioned, the current study further investigates how this megatrend impacts the various actors of the outdoor recreation operating in the Lugano region. In order to achieve the final objective of the study, a fieldwork will be conducted utilizing qualitative research by interviewing the stakeholders above-mentioned. The framework will outline prominent factors that push the industry towards the digital, in particular the link between tourism and digital transformation will be presented and discussed, highlighting the involvement of digital technologies in the business models, the digital interaction in modelling tourism businesses and the significance of a digital-oriented approach to run businesses.
