Abstract

This work aims to deliver an extended analysis of sustainability in the sports events industry, with a focus on the Triathlon world. A literature-based overview of sustainability applied to the Sport events is provided in the first section, covering the various types of sustainability linked to sporting events such as economic, cultural-social, and environmental. After the theoretical framework, a case study of the Italian triathlon race called Challenge Sanremo, is introduced and developed. In this section, the macro elements of sustainable events such as economic, cultural-social, and environmental are deeply analysed through field analyses at the venue and questionnaires that have been submitted to various stakeholders. The content of this work is mainly based on primary data and the methods used for their collection are based and illustrate the triple bottom-line sustainability concept. With the adopted method it was possible to identify that the event had several impacts on economic, social, and environmental components. Positive impact on the local economic fabric have been detected. Networking between stakeholder and geographical location is considered extremely relevant, and tourism increased thanks to the event. As for the social pillar it stood out that local community liked the race and had not the feeling to be exploited, and legacy initiative were not really considered. On the environmental aspect Challenge Sanremo is not a leading event in the sport industry, sustainable tourism is encouraged for the future, and caution on greenwashing is suggested.
