Abstract

--- Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery is under less constraints compared to its optical counterpart, but is also more difficult to interpret due to several phenomena related to the use of radio waves, namely layover, foreshortening and shadowing. Combined with the fact that satellite imagery can be expensive to produce, the goal of the project is that of developing a tool to simulate a satellite acquisition and reprojecting it in SAR geometry. The user is also able to define an area on the ground as a Region of Interest, which will be marked in order to determine its degree of visibility in the final product. In addition, the simulation is to be done through rasterization in order to justify approximating results in favor of performance. Simulation is performed through the use of both a Digital Elevation Model as a base for the terrain and a Sentinel-1 orbit file for orienting the image acquisition, as well as OpenGL 4.4 for rasterization. Development lead to the generation of a SAR-reprojected optical image compatible with the data analysis software ENVI, containing both shadowing and layover encoded through color channels.
