Schindler Locarno, which is the leading company in the production of the electronic components of Schindler group's products, is one of the many production sites spread worldwide of the Schindler group. However, due to both the geographical position and the morphology of the region, that cause disadvantages in terms of production cost (e.g. space costs, cost of the workforce), this site has to develop organizational, management and technological solutions in order to continuously improve the performances thanks to innovative techniques that can then be transferred to the rest of the group. Schindler Locarno has so developed a complex system of management of the product life cycle that embraces all the phases of the production process, from the design of the lines (including the industrialization of the product), to their realization and, lastly, to the management of production and logistic flows, that are integrated into the global supply chain; this work is only a part of the complex system, that allows to manage the production system (production management), meant to develop a system able to optimize the scheduling and assignment of workers to the different production lines and work stations. The first thing to do to develop this system was to analyze the current state of production resource planning in order to be able to define, then, its requirements and implementation methods. This work has therefore developed a method that, by the data and information present in the company in different information systems (such as MRP system SAP, WLC, GAS), process a staff assignment and planning perfectly integrated with the current production management system. Thanks to this system the time spent on scheduling the resources has been reduced by 35%, it has also solved the problem of mistakes on the calculation of the required capacity and, at last, the efficiency of the production lines has been increased by solving an optimization problem. Currently the system has been implemented in Microsoft Excel because of the need to get the tools used daily by the company and in order to improve its efficiency. Yet the work elaborates a model of mathematical optimization that could be implemented in different environment or integrated into the corporate ERP system as a service to extend the current functionalities. The work has also overhaul and validated the effectiveness of the production management system, known as "Capacity Requirement Planning", which is based on the production orders obtained from the company MRP system and plans and defines the use of company resources in work shifts.
