Abstract

This paper sets up an investigation of the audio-only (AO) and audio-visual (AV) listening comprehension approaches in a Scuola Media Superiore (SMS) in Ticino as a mean to build and expand listening comprehension skills. The working hypothesis of this study is that AO listening comprehension will lead to better results both in terms of accuracy in answering comprehension questions and completing fill-in-the-blanks sentences, and in terms of enjoyment of the activity. Though the study is not carried out, and no data is available, a thorough discussion of the literature concerning cognitive theory is examined in order to gain a better understanding of the conflicting results presented in similar studies due to the array of definitions and theoretical frameworks employed by the researchers as well as other variables. Furthermore, expected findings and results are listed. It is clear that teacher discretion and preparation is key to the didactic applications of AO and AV listening comprehension exercises. More research is needed to better define and refine key characteristics to take into consideration in this area of language teaching and learning, especially as technology advances and more authentic material is available for use in the language classroom.
