Abstract

The orthostates in grès of the amphitheatre of Avenches (VD) (Fig.1) are subjected to the delamination of its layers. This phenomenon causes the progressive loss of fragment of stone. In order to slow down this decay with the fi lling of the cracks causes by the delamination, a mortar and a grouting are elaborated in the laboratory of Site et Musée romains d’Avenches. Composition and preparation of mortar and grouting was subject to principles, decided by the direction of SMRA: the binder was of natural hydraulique lime; mixes (especially the mix of mortar) must not contain additives; preparation and test of sample must be made according with recognized norms. After the study of the stone’s physical and mechanical properties, different mixes of mortar and grout are prepared in laboratory. They are tested for obtaining information about their physical and mechanical properties. At the end, two grouts and two mortars are selected for an application in situ on an orthostate in critical condition of conservation. This application permits the evaluation of the workability of mortars and grouts and visual appearance of the intervention on the stone.
